How we met
It all started the summer of 2018. I had just moved to New York and one of my friends mentioned that he knew a guy that “played basketball” and was “cool.” I didn’t think much of it until a few months later…
Fast forward to December 2018. My friend Sloan was throwing a holiday party and I went onto the Facebook invite to see who was attending. I had a few other plans that night but after seeing a picture of one of the attendees I decided I would stop by. I tried to Facebook stalk her but her profile was set to private and she had no other pictures so I had to stare at her picture from one inch away from the screen.
Before I arrived at the party, I knew I was going to talk to try and talk to her. However, I did not have a plan so I kind of awkwardly stood around her until I had an opening to say something. That opening presented itself when she mentioned to someone else that she had gone to BU and I immediately ended their conversation and inserted myself, declaring that that I too had gone to BU, but for law school. I did not think this far ahead, so the the first thing I thought to ask was if she ever went to the gym (which is an absurd first question if you know Elise).
I actually Facebook stalked Matt, too. His profile was also private, but I was able to click on his profile picture. It was a photo of Blake Griffin dunking on some Lakers guy, so I immediately assumed he was weird. Who doesn’t put a photo of themselves as their profile picture?
No, I did not really go to the gym. While we were talking, Matt started doing the thing where someone leans onto a wall with one arm (think high school bully from an 80s movie talking to a girl at a locker) and talking about all the times he went to the gym (just kidding). We talked a little more before I was called away to play white elephant. Matt did not bring a gift so he just stood to the side of the room staring at me (just kidding?).
I noticed Elise and her friend were getting ready to leave so I thought I’d make one last move. I walked over and they said they were heading to Piano’s in the Lower East Side and invited me to join. I said maybe (knowing full well I was not going there). I was unsure if Elise was interested (I guess she’s not a Blake Griffin fan) so I panic-asked her friend for his number, but he knew the number I really wanted and said to get Elise’s instead.
Countless well-planned dates and 6 years later, I am still unsure if she is interested but now we’re getting married so that’s pretty cool.
He tried to play it cool by waiting 3 days to ask me out. I said yes and we had our first date at 3 p.m. on a Saturday at La Lanterna di Vittorio in in the back patio (who plans a date for 3 p.m on a Saturday?).
